Naples “Field of Dreams” Evaporated...

But the NPC luncheon last Wednesday was quite festive and typical of a stadium experience.

Peanuts, Cracker Jacks, hot dogs, bratwurst, waitresses in T-shirts saying “Naples Wants the Cubs", and even audience members wearing Cubs baseball caps provided a fun atmosphere.

Immokalee: Images of Hope

The picture of Immokalee painted by Brynn Bruijn and Phil Beuth at the last luncheon was both powerful, startling and unsettling.  Hard to imagine the disparity of this poverty ridden town just 30 miles from what is said to be the richest county in the state.

Through the lens of Bruijn and with the banter of Beuth we learned that there is hope for change here, especially with the philanthropic efforts of the Collier Foundation which has granted millions of dollars to nonprofits over the past 20 years.

Inside Scoop: Members Books and more

Here are some books by NPC member/authors popping up lately:

Past President Joan Curley has had her seventh book published, entitled “LUCIAN’S BOAT, The Story of a Boy’s Life by the Sea”.  She was inspired to write it while viewing a painting by Tom Cardamone, at the von Liebig Art Center Show. The book, for both parents, and children from grades 4 through high school, tells the story of growth and the continuing cycle of renewal in children’s dreams of the future. The book can be purchased from Curley directly or through the publisher www.authorhouse.com. She and her husband Neil enjoyed a cruise of South America over the holidays.

Apr 10, 2010: Celebrity Author Luncheon

“An inside story from an insider featuring behind the scenes of military meetings, boardrooms, and parlors of the Washington power elite.”

That’s how the books of Karna Bodman have been described. She served in the White House under President Reagan for six years, first as deputy press secretary under James Brady and later as Senior Director of the National Security Council.

Her experiences have resulted in books in which her heroes race against time and terrorists mixing suspense, romance and death scenarios.

Jan 26, 2010 Lunch: Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Naples' “Field of Dreams” will be addressed on January 26th, when Gary Price of Naples City Council, and the Fifth Avenue Advisors, and David Moulton of ESPN radio will speak at this newsmakers lunch.

The question of whether the Chicago Cubs will come to Naples in 2011 for spring training is on the agenda. This hot topic has been tossed around in the news for months, and Price has been extremely instrumental in trying to persuade the Cubs to make Naples their second home. Moulton, a frequent sports writer at the NDN, has past experience as Sports Anchor for ABC 7 and is currently co-host of “Miller and Moulton in the Afternoon”.

Reliable Sources: News About Fellow Journalists

Information about the number of journalist murdered and imprisoned continues to startle. However, the most disturbing news story lately involved the blogs following the obit of Deborah Howell in “Politics Daily”.

Bloggers wrote a shocking number of angry, vile comments accusing Howell of being “a lefty”-  since she was in the news business and noting “how fabulous that she was killed…one less of those anti-US types to deal with.”

When did journalists become so hated? Or is it that bloggers enjoy taking out their angst on the media—even someone they had never heard of until the day before yesterday?

Howell was a well-respected, former Washington Post omsbudsman and one of the first women to lead a major daily (St. Paul Pioneer Press) breaking the glass ceiling for women in journalism. She was a powerful presence in American journalism and doesn’t deserve this kind of vituperation.

New York, December 17, 2009 - At least 68 journalists worldwide were killed for their work in 2009, the highest yearly tally ever documented by the Committee to Protect Journalists, the organization said in its year-end analysis. The record toll was driven in large part by the election-related slaughter of more than 30 media workers in the Philippine province of Maguindanao, the deadliest event for the press in CPJ history.
